The spectacle below.
Your place above.
Watch from designated areas on the headland, only when open. Stay behind barriers and away from exposed cliff edges.
Never step onto the sand or approach the water to watch or film. A quiet interval can end with a set reaching apparently dry ground.
A calm-looking beach is no assurance of safety, in any season. Professional surfers in the water are never an invitation to follow.

SÍTIO · ABOVE PRAIA DO NORTEThe fort and its red lighthouse overlook the break from the promontory. This is the landmark to head for when planning a visit to Praia do Norte.
Check opening and access before you go. Use only designated areas that are open to the public; if the approach is closed, respect the closure and follow the waves remotely.

Out to the Atlantic.
Reach Sítio above the lower town, then follow the designated approach towards the fort. On major swell days, leave time for crowds, parking and local access controls.
The funicular is the historic link between the two. Check its operating status and any replacement service before travelling; don't plan around an assumed departure.
Local instructions come first.
Competitions and major swells bring larger crowds and tighter access controls. Follow barriers and marshals, even if they change where you can watch.
Keep the Atlantic in view.
Follow offshore swell, wind and available camera imagery without making the journey. Check the source and update time of each reading; local authorities remain the reference for access on the day.
Offshore readings do not measure the breaking wave face or establish whether a viewing area is open.
